A MotionChart is
a visualization tool to observe how multiple variables change over
the course of time. Up to four variables can be represented at at
time: one each for the X and Y axes, one for the color of each data
point and one for the size.
When our chart first loads on your screen,
Substance Abuse Index is on the X axis,
Violence Index is on the Y axis,
Region is the color, and
Population is the size.
This view may be modified by clicking on any of the chart labels and
selecting another variable from the drop-down list.
Press the "Play" button at the lower left to start an animation of
the various variables over time. You may also drag the position
indicator on the timeline to find the data for any given year. You
may find the county name for any given data point by hovering the
mouse over any given point. To see a trail which shows how a given
county varies over time, find the county and click on it until it
shows the county name and year for the data point. You may select
multiple counties to compare.
If you wish to create your own similar MotionChart with your
own data, you may do so by creating a
Google Spreadsheet
and following
these instructions.
If you see a blank screen, it is possible that you do not have
Adobe Flash
installed. Adobe Flash Player is required to see these charts.
